Candice Rowe and Mike Sherrill landed what was generally
considered by their M.B.A.graduating class to be "plum" jobs of the year. Both
were corporate planning jobs in the large conglomerate United Products. United
has reputation of offering good salaries and job security. However, new M.B.A.s
usually began their job with the 'trenches" in one of the firms hold by United
and gradually worked their way up to a headquarters posting. Candice and Mike
planning jobs were already at headquarters. By most standards, the jobs paid
well and offered some interesting opportunities for expense account travel.
Candice and Mike were the envy of their classmates when they receive their
offers from United. Thus most were amazed to learn that Mike has quit his job
only seven month after being hired. Mike's boss was also surprised, since his
performance had been fine during the seven months.
The person who wasn't
surprised about mike's quitting was Candice. Between trips they had frequently
compared notes on the jobs they held, jobs that were essentially identical
except for the specific project each was working on, Mike began to indicate that
he was less than happy with what he had gotten himself into.
"This travel is
really getting to me, Candice. My wife and kids look at me like I'm a deserter
when I tell them I've got another business trip coming up."
Candice who was
single, responded, "Yes, I guess it's tough when you have a family. It is funny,
though, I really like travel. It's like a fringe benefit for me, getting to see
so many places."
"Also, continued Mike, "the extra hours I'm putting in here
when I'm not traveling are causing the same problem. I'm often working until
seven every night. When I was an engineer, we'd get paid overtime for doing
that!"
Candice looked thoughtful and then said," I don't mind putting in the
extra hours because everyone else is doing it. If others were taken off early,
I'm sure I'd change my tune."
On another occasion, Mike and Candice had
discussed the actual kind of work done in corporate planning. Candice said," I'm
glad this is a staff job. I'm good at digging out information, doing financial
projection, and writing reports. I don't think I'd be very good at line
management telling people what to do."
Mike laughed. "I got out of
engineering and took an M.B.A. so I could tell people what to do. Somehow,
though, I've landed another staff position here at united, and I don't have any
slaves at my beck and call."
Shortly after this discussion, Mike told Candice
that he had landed a management position back at his old engineering firm and
that he would be leaving United in two weeks.
Candice marveled at how two
people could view the same job so differently.
